Cashier

July 2018 - August 2019 • Manteca, CA

What I liked

The people that I met while working. They were honestly the only thing that kept me from quitting for so long

What I wish was different

Never applied because target sucks. I worked there an entire year and on my review (after they had me cover multiple shifts, work positions outside of being a cashier, etc.) They gave me a whopping $0.20 raise. 20 cents. The company DOES NOT care about you I can promise you that.

Advice

If you dont like doing the same exact thing over and over and over again definitely dont be a cashier at target. Also I wish I would have asked for more of a raise once they had me doing tasks outside of my position because they basically take advantage of you not asking.

Technology Specialist

May - August 2021 • Richmond, VA

What I liked

I liked getting the firsthand experience of watching products move from distributor to customer. It was really eye-opening to get a retail experience that used my technology knowledge to assist people.

What I wish was different

I wish that there was less work that wasn't related to my position; oftentimes I was rearranging the toys and books section even those technically aren't part of the electronics section.

Advice

Definitely do it if you need a good summer job, it helped me pay for summer classes and have some spending money on top of that

Apparels and Accessories Sales person

May - August 2019 • Boulder, CO

What I liked

I liked a lot of my coworkers here. Most of of became really close friends so that made work go by fast.

What I wish was different

The communication within this Target location was terrible. Since my colleagues and I weren't considered "point people" we were often left out of the loop for lots of tasks. This lack of communication also results in employees getting chewed out or even laid off without notice (like in my case) because team leaders do not communicate about people calling in and such. Communication skills are so important when it comes to large corporations like this and it was disappointing/frustrating to experience everything that I did since I ended up getting the short end of the stick. Despite doing everything I was instructed to do for my situation.

Advice

As someone whose worked in the apparels and Accessories department, you can't have thin skin. I dealt with lots of difficult customers and point people so it's important to not take a lot of anger personally. If someone is soft hearted and easy to stress, I wouldn't reccomend this job to them.

Executive management intern

June - August 2019 • Tacoma, WA

What I liked

I enjoyed getting to see more about how a large retailer runs. With the Tacoma Target being one of the top two Targets in Washington doing over 50 million a year there was a lot to learn. The company was going through lots of new changes and seeing how they were being implemented first hand was an amazing experience.

What I wish was different

I wish there was more organization and time being invested as growing me as a leader. Since things were so fast-paced sometimes I felt like I wasn't getting the most of the experience. Compared to the other people I spoke to in the program at other locations I didn't get as much responsibility to jump in and try leading until the very end. Which didn't give me much time to grow as a leader as I would have liked. Being an executive intern and working alongside team leaders or members often times there wasn't a situation set up for me to lead rather than be an extra hand.

Advice

If you go into this experience go in determined to lead. Be vocal and express concerns that you are having right away. Don't let you be an intern make you feel like you have to just listen to what team members or team leaders are telling you to do. You are there to help lead and not only take orders and be an extra hand. insert yourself in different situations to lead even if you don't feel prepared.

Cashier/Pizza Hut

April 2016 • Batavia, IL

What I liked

Everyone there is very nice. The pay was very nice and it was always enjoyable to talk to my co-workers. I really enjoyed my Pizza Hut job.

What I wish was different

The Pizza Hut I worked at just got closed down to make more storage room for Starbucks. Pizza Hut made a good amount of money but threw out a lot of food. The pay is nice, but the hours tend to be very poor.

Advice

If you are looking for a lot of hours, this may not be the place for you. They like to pay high but give few hours while continuing to hire more employees.

April 2020 • Lee's Summit, MO

What I liked

I enjoyed a different experience from my previous role as a cashier for the store.

What I wish was different

More mentorship and hands-on training with my boss. I felt I did not get a lot of training and was just expected to know what to do or was given minimum tasks.

Advice

Do it at a store where you'll receive mentorship .

What I wish was different

I wish that there would have been a few more opportunities to meet the other interns.

Advice

What I liked

Target is a nice job especially for a college student, they pay well, are flexible with hours, and my coworkers are all great people.

What I wish was different

What I liked

I experienced the Pandemic head on. I witnessed miracles and the best and worst of humanity.

What I wish was different

Our workload increased and our hours decreased. I feel like I disserviced myself being in a low labor job. I wish I could be in a Tech job right now.

Barista

July 2017 - August 2019 • Fredericksburg, VA

What I liked

I loved the people I worked with and being able to connect with the guests that would come in. I developed a connection with my team leads and they helped me a lot during my first couple months of working there.

What I wish was different

I do wish that there would have been more consistency with hours and the schedule making as sometimes they would do hour cuts with no warning until the new schedules were posted.

Advice

One piece of advice I would give is to always keep yourself level headed when dealing with difficult customers or people as it makes it easier in the long run.

Cashier

June - August 2019 • Quakertown, PA

What I liked

That the job wasn't too high stakes or anything earth shattering, there were some usual issues that come with retail jobs but nothing too often. Shifts and hours every week were consistent and not exhausting for a summer job.

What I wish was different

A little bit less of a reliance on having to get customers to sign up for the company credit/debit card, while they told us we couldn't be fired for not getting them, there was always a "Well you don't have to but..." in the air that did lead to times that felt like there was too much pressure on me and other coworkers.

Advice

If you're able to, be honest about what specific work hours you want/shifts, I've had other jobs where I was more reluctant and ended up getting used despite what I had asked for but was afraid to talk about to get changed.
