Hawaii Pacific Health

Student Intern

January 2023 • Honolulu, HI

What I liked

I love my work environment, where everyone is included and welcomed no matter what. I especially loved the teams that I have worked with because I was and still can learn various things within the HR department. I started my internship with the Workforce Development team, where I assisted with tasks that included but were not limited to scanning documents, administering skills testing, and preparing necessary paperwork for interviews. While working with the Workforce Development team, I supported the Recruitment team with some of their responsibilities that were not limited to covering the front desk and processing employee transfer paperwork. Currently, I am working with the Benefits team, which has been the team I feel most comfortable with. This team has allowed me to open up and feel like a close-knit family. In Benefits, some of my responsibilities are creating new leave requests, processing leaves to send out the Employer Rights and Responsibilities Packets, and processing denials for leaves.

Advice

Know that you always have room to improve, but it is up to you to grow! Also, you are working with adults, so don't let what happened in school determine who you are when at work.

Information Technology Intern

June - July 2022 • Honolulu, HI

What I liked

I liked how supportive my co-workers were and how I got to shadow different departments in Straub Medical Center. I also like how there was a project that we had to work on and present to leadership at the end of the program.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more things to do during the day, as sometimes I was just sitting at my desk doing nothing. This depends entirely on your department, though.

Advice

Network with other interns and co-workers!

Summer Student Research Scholar

June - August 2019 • Honolulu, HI

What I liked

I had a multitude of opportunities to shadow various physicians and observe surgeries in addition to our career Q&A fit into the schedule with physicians. I also had the opportunity to visit 3 medical centers and learn even more about the different specialties and what it means TK be a physician. The research component gave me an inside look into clinical research as a physician and what it entails.

What I wish was different

There were many opportunities but all of it was compressed into 8 weeks. I wish the program had been longer to allow more time to explore medicine and work on our research projects.

Advice

Take advantage of any and all opportunities that you’re remotely interested in. You don’t know what you might like and what you might not until you’re seeing it for yourself first-hand.

Surgical Intern

June - July 2018 • Līhuʻe, HI

What I liked

I had such an amazing time learning from the doctors, nurses, surgeons, and technicians. It was amazing being able to watch a procedure and ask questions. It was even more amazing that it was a paid internship so I got to do different hands on jobs around the hospital. It was one of the best experiences of my life, and I am so fortunate to have been apart of it.

What I wish was different

I really wish that it was longer. The internship itself only lasted six weeks during the summer and I felt so used to the routine that it was hard having to say goodbye to my coworkers and leave.

Advice

Some advice that I have for others that want to get an internship is to just not be afraid to ask questions. It may seem intimidating at first because you have working with all these professionals, but many of them love to teach and love questions because it shows you have an interest in the field.

Hawaii Pacific Health Health Careers Summer Intern

June - August 2018 • Honolulu, HI

What I liked

I had the opportunity to shadow physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and technicians from various departments at multiple hospitals on Oahu. It was a great experience to learn more about hospitals and see how all the departments are interconnected. I was also able to get a better sense of what I am looking for in my future career now that I have been exposed to so many options.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been able to spend more time in each department to network and get to know the people there better. However, this would have also limited the variety of departments I was able to visit.

Advice

In experiences like this, it is important to take advantage of any and all opportunities you are presented with. If you are not getting the opportunities you had hoped for, go out of your way to find them while you are in a position to do so.
