Industrial Hygienist
Responsibilities:
As a Navy Industrial Hygiene Officer (IHO), you will be responsible for ensuring the health and safety of Navy Sailors and Marines by assessing workplace hygiene hazards. Key duties include:
- Assessing risks and providing consultation to Navy Commanding Officers.
- Leading Environmental and Occupational Health, Industrial Hygiene, and Safety programs.
- Conducting training and inspections aboard ships, shore-based workplaces, or in the field.
- Advising on environmental health issues to minimize injury and disease risks.
- Managing hygiene risks globally across operational, living, and working environments.
You will oversee programs such as Occupational Exposure Assessment, Hearing Conservation, Respiratory Protection, Ergonomics, and Hazardous Material management.
Work Environment:
IHOs serve at over 120 duty stations worldwide, including aboard aircraft carriers, U.S. Naval Hospitals, Marine Corps commands, and more, with opportunities in Hawaii, Guam, Japan, Italy, and more.
Training & Advancement:
- Required: Officer Development School (ODS) in Newport, RI (5 weeks).
- Ongoing training in Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Protection, and Naval Operations.
- Post-service opportunities for certification and career advancement in related fields.
Qualifications:
- U.S. citizenship, Bachelor’s degree (Industrial Hygiene, Biology, Chemistry, or related field), or Master’s degree (preferred).
- Minimum GPA: 3.0, with at least 40 semester hours in science courses.
- Must be between 18 and 41 years old and in good physical condition.
- Required to serve a minimum of three years on Active Duty.
Preferred:
- Certification in Industrial Hygiene (CIH).
- Field experience as an Industrial Hygienist or Technician.
