Pastor of Missions and Community Engagement

PASTOR OF MISSIONS AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

MANOA VALLEY CHURCH

Position Description

TITLE: Pastor of Missions and Community Engagement

STATUS: 1-Year Contract, with Intent to Extend

WHO WE ARE

“Striving to love God, love others, and follow Jesus Christ, so that we may be a transforming presence in Mānoa Valley and beyond.”

Mānoa Valley Church (MVC) is a Christ-centered, multi-generational community dedicated to loving God, loving others, and reflecting the light of Jesus in our community and beyond. Grounded in grace and guided by the Holy Spirit, we seek to walk alongside our neighbors—sharing life, meeting needs, and cultivating genuine relationships that embody God’s justice, mercy, hope, and love. We strive to be a spiritual home where people of all ages find purpose in Jesus Christ, build meaningful connections, and participate in God's transformative work in Mānoa Valley and beyond.

THE OPPORTUNITY

We are seeking a Pastor of Missions and Community Engagement who will help us deepen and broaden our missional reach. This is a one-year contract position, with a strong desire and intention to extend for more years if we discern God's continued call together. This role is part-time (approximately 20+ hours/week) and reports directly to the Senior Pastor, working closely with the Missions Committee.

We believe this position would be especially compelling for a leader passionate about holistic, community-centered ministry—someone who senses God stirring them to explore innovative, Kingdom-oriented ways of serving marginalized communities and addressing issues of social justice. If you long to build a Christ-centered missional culture within a local church and spark a new generation's love and care for neighbors in need, this may be your calling.

PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL CHARACTERISTICS

  • Christ-Centered: You have a vibrant relationship with Jesus and a deep reliance on Scripture and prayer.
  • Visionary Leader: You imagine fresh ways for the Church to be the hands and feet of Christ in our community.
  • Relationally Focused: You excel at forging genuine connections, both within the congregation and with our neighbors.
  • Passionate About Mission: You are burdened by injustice and compelled to serve the marginalized and vulnerable.
  • Collaborator: You know how to rally teams, invite diverse voices to the table, and empower volunteers.
  • Creative and Adaptable: You relish the chance to innovate and try new methods of engaging the broader community.

PRIMARY ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Bridge Between Church and Community
  • Cultivate strong relationships with local organizations, nonprofits, and community groups, seeking shared opportunities to serve in ways that reflect the love of Jesus.
  • Identify meaningful, hands-on service projects and outreach events that resonate especially with younger adults, families, and college/post-college individuals.
  • Advocate for compassion, justice, and reconciliation as an authentic extension of MVC's ministry in Mānoa Valley.

  1. Build a Missional Culture
  • Foster an environment within MVC where relationships, not just programs, drive our mission.
  • Encourage and model a spirit of hospitality, inclusivity, and bridge-building across all generations.
  • Incorporate outreach and mission opportunities into the everyday rhythm of church life, so everyone feels invited to serve.

  1. Empower Congregation for Kingdom Work
  • Provide training, resources, and spiritual support to equip individuals, Connection Groups, and families for effective community engagement.
  • Help people discover and use their unique gifts-enabling them to serve in ways that bring joy and lasting impact.
  • Champion intergenerational ministry by partnering with youth, children's, and family ministries to collaborate on mission projects.

  1. Develop Strategic Partnerships
  • Initiate and grow partnerships with local churches, faith-based initiatives, and civic organizations to increase our collective Kingdom impact.
  • Connect MVC with the Hawaii Conference UCC, national UCC ministries, and broader ecumenical networks to spotlight opportunities for service and collaboration.
  • Ensure that our outreach efforts are purposeful, coordinated, and responsive to the community's actual needs.

  1. Support Transformational Relationships
  • Encourage ongoing, relational engagement over one-time events-helping congregants see themselves as long-term companions to those in need.
  • Design initiatives that walk alongside the underprivileged or marginalized in consistent, life-giving ways.
  • Champion a culture of genuine friendship and mutual respect as we share God's love in practical, personal ways.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Congregational Engagement: Regularly attend worship, small groups, and church-wide events to form strong connections and remain accessible.
  • Leadership Development: Partner with the Missions Committee to mentor and release church members into leadership roles.
  • Team Collaboration: Coordinate with MVC staff, ministry leaders, and volunteers for cohesive, Spirit-led outreach.
  • Administrative Support: Help implement effective systems, policies, and communication strategies that support and sustain outreach initiatives.

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

  • Experience in ministry leadership, outreach, or community organizing, particularly in church or nonprofit settings.
  • Ability to engage and connect with diverse cultures, age groups, and life situations.
  • Excellent organizational skills, able to manage multiple initiatives while keeping people and relationships at the forefront.
  • Demonstrated passion for mobilizing younger generations in mission and social justice.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS

  • Contract Term: 1-year contract, with the intent to extend 3+ years pending mutual discernment and funding.
  • Hours: Part-time (20-25 hours/week).
  • Compensation: Commensurate with responsibilities, qualifications, and experience.
  • Location: Mānoa Valley Church, 2728 Huapala Street, Honolulu, HI.
