Length: Term of positions is 16 weeks; full-time 40 hrs/wk

Living Allowance: $600/week plus $200/week additional benefits (pre-tax)

AmeriCorps Award: Position is eligible for an AmeriCorps education award upon successful completion of the program. Value of education award is $$1,824 (pre-tax)

Title of Position: Botanical Technician

 

 

Position Details:

Stewards Individual Placements (Stewards) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants serve with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health. Stewards in partnership with Hawaii Volcanoes National Park are seeking a candidate who will serve with a diverse crew on vegetation management activities, primarily invasive plant control in an outdoor field setting using herbicides, hand tools, and possibly chainsaws. The incumbent may function as a co-leader for volunteer groups and high school youth rangers working on invasive plant control projects. Secondary duties will include assisting with surveys and control for Rapid 'Ohi'a Death, biosecurity surveys, outplanting native plants, and other duties as assigned.

 

 

Position Responsibilities will include:

  • Works with a team to control invasive plants in both frontcountry and backcountry settings. Fieldwork involves surveying, identification, and mechanical/chemical removal for invasive plant species in natural areas
  • Keeps accurate and detailed records of treatment and control work. Inputs and updates spatial data in databases and GPS mobile mapping units and assists with error checking and quality control
  • Works with the biosecurity team to conduct inspections and monitor field sites
  • Participates in surveys to detect trees infected by Ceratocystis (Rapid Ohia Death)
  • Assist the restoration team with propagating native seedlings and planting and collecting seeds
