The Assistant Manager Maintenance, along with the Manager, Maintenance provide the oversight and management of all day-to-day operations of the Engineering Department at the Hawai‘i Convention Center. The Assistant Manager is responsible for ensuring the building and equipment are in good working order. This involves administrative and technical work, directing a full range of activities relating to the facilities operation and performance both functionally and aesthetically.
Essential Functions:
MANAGES OVERALL DEPARTMENT: Support Manager Maintenance daily in managing department at all times. Performs Maintenance Managers duties in his absence:
- Provide day-to-day management of Department to meet the needs of the venue and client(s). Manages and trains staff to ensure all are compliant with department policies/procedures.
- Recommend policy improvements to management to ensure all employees understand and can adequately perform their job duties.
- Responsible for making hiring and disciplinary decisions and monitor performance of staff.
- Properly monitors pertinent information from management concerning departments, duties or current events and communicates that information appropriately to staff as needed.
- Responsible for driving to various places on island to receive and/or purchase inventory or other necessary items to aid in the department.
MANAGES ENGINEERING AND MAINTENANCE OF VENUE:
- Monitor elevator/escalator, grease traps, fire suppression and sprinkler systems.
- Ordering of material as needed.
- Disburse and prioritize all work orders.
- Create, distribute and monitor all P/M’s.
- Operate facility computerized facility management and control systems
- Respond to assistance requests throughout the facility.
PROJECT MANAGEMENT:
- Provide support to Manager Maintenance with in-house projects and outside contractor projects as needed.
- Consult and get bids from contractors as needed
FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT:
- Work with Manager Maintenance on creating/developing, maintaining and managing respective department budget.
- Document, track, monitor, and analyzes departmental finances. Reports finances/budget, reforecasts and provides recommendations for financial strategy of departmental expenses to Operations department.
- Provide prompt, cost effective solutions to facility maintenance issues.
SAFETY:
- Responsible for the distribution and quantity of essential supplies and equipment. Ensure staff has adequate supplies, tools and materials on hand and available at all times.
- Abide by all Safety policies and procedures relating to building and respective department.
- Keep all records current and up to date with all SDS. Ensures policies are procedures are up to date, accurate and compliant
- Operates equipment. Oversees staff operation of equipment.
- Conducts safety training as pertaining to the department.
Required Qualifications (Job Knowledge, Skills, and Education):
- A minimum high school level or equivalent education.
- A minimum of 3 years of related work experience to include at least 2 years of supervisory experience
- Good working knowledge of major facility and maintenance.
- Must have a good working knowledge A/C, Plumbing and Electrical
- Must have a working knowledge of BAS Automated Logic or comparable system
- Must have a good working understanding of budgeting.
- Must maintain lift certification(s) as needed by the department.
- Must maintain a valid driver license.
- Must be able to be lift/carry up to approximately 50 pounds.
- Must be able to work in difficult positions/environment. This includes frequent exposure to sun, sitting, standing, moving about, climbing, twisting/bending/stooping, reaching, use of fine finger movements, hand/eye coordination, pushing and pulling.
- Able to operate basic equipment and tools for respective department.
- Knowledge and use of proper safety techniques, procedures and equipment during the course of the day.
- Thorough knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions as they pertain to engineering and building
- Demonstrated ability to follow departmental and company procedures accurately and efficiently.
- Strong leadership skills; ability to make quick decisions to complete job duties.
- Ability to support and maintain a high standard of productivity in the department; must possess effective people skills and display an attitude of cooperation and willingness to assist at all times.
- Ability to establish daily reports and schedules; ability to lead labor to succeed in all work orders and to constantly keep staff productive.
- Effective oral and written communication skills, good supervisory skills, ability to follow and communicate oral and written instructions.
- Ability to conduct in a professional, positive and friendly manner.
- Must be able to work varied shifts, weekdays, weekends, holidays and additional hours as venue schedule requires.
- Must be able to take initiative, have accuracy and ability to work under moderate direction
- Proficient with Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, Outlook) and ability to learn required business systems

Preferred Qualifications (if applicable):
- Strong supervisory background
- Strong working knowledge in the mechanical, HVAC, electrical and plumbing fields.
- Experience in convention centers, special events, hotels, hospitality, or related industries.
Range of pay $60K-75K annually (salaried)
