JMK Engineers, launched by Principal Justin Killingswoth, a mechanical and electrical engineer, is headquartered in Honolulu, Hawaii and serves clients across the Hawaiian Islands.

JMK Engineers offers comprehensive services to architects, developers, AOAOs, and contractors, spanning a wide range of projects: hotels, restaurants, hospitality, healthcare facilities, aviation requirements, educational institutions, science and technology laboratories, multi-family developments, luxury single-family residences, retail spaces, and more. About the Role

JMK Engineers is currently seeking a talented, well-rounded, and knowledgeable individual for the Junior Mechanical and/or Electrical Engineer role, with typically, a minimum of five years of ever-increasing responsibility within the industry, and up to ten years experience. This experience can include time with a construction company, a contractor, or engineering firm. 

 

The ideal candidate will appreciate and excel in a dynamic career opportunity that offers significant scope and accountability, while also benefiting from dedicated mentorship and coaching for professional development. We operate in a fast-paced environment within a streamlined team structure.
 

A local role is preferred, although a hybrid work and/or remote role will be considered for the right candidate, and as such requires a proven track-record on working as part of a distributed and high-performing team. Strong communication and client management skills is a must. 

 

Qualifications

Time in industry: 5-10 years

 

Essential Design Skills: 

 

Specific to the Electrical Engineering role to include (but not necessarily limited to):

  • Electrical load calculations with regard to National Electrical Code (NEC)
  • Knowledge of power distribution equipment (MDP’s, MCC’s, Load Centers, etc.) sizing and layout
  • One-line diagrams
  • Energy code compliant lighting controls
  • Light level calculations via Visual Lighting software
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, with a strong emphasis of performing calculations and analysis via Excel

 

Specific to the Mechanical Engineering role to include (but not necessarily limited to):

  • Cooling load calculations via Trane Trace 3D Plus and/or Carrier Hourly Analysis Program (HAP)
  • ASHRAE 62.1 compliant ventilation loads & design
  • HVAC airside and hydronic layout
  • Kitchen grease exhaust and makeup air design with regard to pressure zones, etc.
  • DWV and domestic water sizing and distribution
  • Hot water plant sizing and equipment selection
  • Grease interceptor sizing, selection, and layout
  • Plumbing isometric diagram

 

In addition to essential design responsibilities, the ideal candidate should demonstrate proficiency in, and ability to work within:

 

  • Google Drive for Desktop and Microsoft Office: competence in utilizing collaborative tools for efficient document management
  • Design process knowledge (SD, DD, CD) and procedures (permitting, RFI's, Addendums, etc.)
  • AutoCAD: ability to operate effectively within an AutoCAD environment, employing company-specific drafting protocol, layers, blocks, etc.
  • Building codes: sound knowledge of local MEP-related building codes, including IBC, NEC, NFPA, UPC, IMC, etc. to assist with MEP-related calculation and design are expected
  • Collaborative skills: capability to conceptualize building systems for coordination amongst trades
  • Drawing development: proficiency in developing clear, scope-apparent drawings for MEP-related systems
