Communications Sustainability Intern

Overview:  Communications Sustainability Intern

  • Period:  2024 (Start date TBD)
  • Level of effort: Part time, 2-4 hours (min) per week during school session; up to 20 hours per week during summer and intercession breaks
  • Pay: $20/hourly rate plus part-time fringe benefits
  • Location: Primarily virtual, with monthly face-to-face events and field work on O`ahu, plus travel to U.S. mainland for training and technology trials
  • Title: Communications & Outreach Sustainability Intern

Duties: Support Simonpietri Enterprises to develop an innovative process and project to recycle local organic wastes and invasive species biomass into renewable energy and other sustainable low-carbon products for use in Hawaii. Internship work will involve outreach and structured interviews with various stakeholders including but not limited to: farmers, waste producers/haulers, community groups and ecological organizations to inform project economics and environmental sustainability. Duties include project management of tasks and team member assignments; management and synthesis of input from the community and interviewees, environmental regulatory information as well as scientific and engineering data; performing technical and market background research; writing technical summaries and progress reports for technical and general audiences, and helping to maintain company websites and content. Interns will also be included in physical in-person events for field work, site visits, and tours to agricultural, industrial, and energy facilities on O`ahu. After graduation, candidates may be considered for full-time positions at Simonpietri Enterprises LLC. 

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled student or recent graduate in a business, communications or other related program.
  • Strong personal interest in sustainability, renewable fuels and energy, waste reduction and recycling, ecological restoration, local food production, and greenhouse gas reduction actions
  • Experience with Microsoft Office products.
  • Oral and written communication skills
  • U.S. citizen or permanent resident

About the employer: Simonpietri Enterprises is a Kailua, Hawaii-based small business focused on sustainable technology research and development and its transition to project development and commercial operations. The company is a technology and project developer of innovative ways to recycle and transform waste streams into useful products and services. One of these is “Aloha Carbon,” which is a process to divert construction and demolition debris from landfills and transform it into low-greenhouse gas fuel to displace imported fossil fuel. Another is “Aloha Fertilizer,” a process to convert local organic wastes such as poultry manure, biodiesel byproducts, greenwaste and invasive species biomass into an engineered organic fertilizer product to displace imported fossil fertilizers. The company has 10 employees, half of whom were hired through our internship program.
