Job Function
Administers water treatment and chemical quality control programs at the power generating station to ensure the continued long-term operation of the plant systems.
Essential Functions
  • Administers powerplant water treatment programs to prevent generating unit forced outages due to water quality control deficiencies.
  • Audits station water and steam instrumentation and operators’ chemical analyses to
  • ensure accuracy.
  • Responsible for ensuring that powerplant waste streams are adequately treated to
  • produce effluent that meets discharge standards.
  • Responsible for proper steam and water quality control during major unit startups.
  • Assumes the duties of the Supervisor, Environmental Compliance when necessary.
  • Provides technical supervision and guidance in chemical cleaning operations and
  • other chemical matters.
  • Responsible for ensuring that safe practices are used in chemical handling
  • operations.
  • Conducts power plant chemistry training for Operating Division personnel.
  • Procures water treatment chemicals.
  • Provides training for station personnel as the need arises.
  • Interacts with all employees and other internal and external suppliers and
  • customers in a positive, supportive, and collaborative manner, to ensure the
  • fulfillment of Company strategic objectives.
  • Promotes teamwork and self-directed workforce in support of quality initiatives and Company values.
  • Supports two-way communications to ensure a focused and well-informed
  • workforce.
  • Participates in Company emergency response activities as assigned, including any activities required to prepare for such emergency response.
Basic Qualifications
Knowledge Requirements
  • Thorough knowledge of analytical chemistry normally acquired through college level courses or equivalent experience.
  • Working knowledge of State and Federal environmental regulations applicable to power plant operations.
  • Working knowledge of personal computers and/or mainframe systems and related software applications a(E-mail, spreadsheets and word processing).
  • Familiarity with power station equipment and chemistry processes.
Skills Requirements
  • Ability to effectively communicate with various levels of the organization, both verbally and
  • in written communication.
  • Leadership skills and abilities to work with a variety of individuals.
  • General troubleshooting skills.
  • Must be able to read and understand blueprints and other technical power plant drawings.
  • Ability to remain flexible in a demanding work environment and adapt to rapidly changing
  • priorities.
  • Must have or be able to qualify for a State of Hawaii driver's license. Must meet the standards for required driving positions stated in the Hiring Standards for Required Driving Positions policy to attend staff meetings and provide technical assistance to other power plants.
Experience Requirements
  • Few years (1-3) of related work experience in an electric utility or equivalent.
  • Few years (1-3) of chemical laboratory experience.
