Mechanical Engineer

Position Summary:


We are seeking a versatile and motivated Mechanical Engineer with strong technical knowledge and hands-on prototyping experience to support our algae technology development. The ideal candidate has a solid foundation in optics, solar technologies, and light systems, and is equally comfortable in research, modeling, and moving innovations from lab to production.  Hands-on skills in prototyping and electronics required.  We are a start up and need all hands-on deck in a lean working environment to accomplish great things!

 

Key Responsibilities:

 

  • Apply principles of optics and light dynamics in design and system optimization.
  • Design, build, optimize and troubleshoot functional system prototypes for 
    • Light distribution
    • Gas exchange
    • Mixing
  • Build cost consciousness
  • Build test platforms for prototypes.
  • Ability to fabricate prototype with a wide array of machines, with cost control as a paramount objective.
  • Photobioreactor system design, including vessel, pumps, mixing, carbon dioxide and nutrient delivery, algae harvesting and processing
  • Support integration of electronics and mechanical components in experimental platforms and algal systems.
  • Plan, execute, and manage scientific experiments.
  • Collect, manage, and analyze experimental data.
  • Develop and apply computational growth simulations.
  • System modeling and data analysis.
  • Support patent-related activities; prior experience with patents is a plus.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office software including Excel a plus.

 

Qualifications:

 

  • Strong hands-on engineering and scientific background.
  • B.S. in mechanical engineering or related field.
  • Demonstrated experience designing a prototype and functional product, either individually or part of a team.
  • Experience with CAD and design software.
  • Experience with facility design software (Aspen, Superpro, etc.) a plus.
  • Experience working within a project management structure with ability to complete tasks on a deadline.
  • Experience developing Equipment lists, Process Flow Diagrams (PRFDs) and Piping and Instrument Diagrams (P&IDs).
  • Proficiency in modeling and data analysis tools.
  • Experience in R&D environments and transitioning concepts to scalable production.
  • Strong organizational skills, capable of working independently with minimal supervision.
  • Design of manufacturing lines for technology developed a plus.
  • Facility design, including equipment sizing, TEA, etc. a plus.
  • Passionate about sustainability and contributing to the local HI economy.
  • Team-oriented with a collaborative mindset.
  • Detail-oriented and adaptable in a fast-paced R&D environment.
  • Ability to transition from R&D to manufacturing as needed.
  • Aligned with Namaka’s core values and long-term vision.
